Remember the days when football clubs marked a special occasion with a little bit of additional embroidery or a drawstring collar?
Well those days are well and truly behind us if Real Sociedad’s Basque blueprint kits are anything to go by.

Macron’s special edition shirts mark the renovation of Real Sociedad’s Anoeta stadium and are as audacious an alternative kit as you are likely to find on Planet Football.
The neon, digital representation of the updated Estadio de Anoeta and her San Sebastian environs, starred on Friday night as Real Sociedad drew 1-1 with lowly Leganes to temporarily reach La Liga’s summit.

The historic Basque club are one of 5 clubs separated by just 2 points at the top of the table, and will curse the 2 points dropped against bottom of the table Leganes, after watching Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla each take turns to leap-frog them over the weekend.
Some will be disappointed to see La Real wearing Macron’s special edition 3rd kit rather than the more familiar Txuri-urdinak (blue & white) colours of the San Sebastian flag to celebrate the modernisation of their home.

We have have it on very good authority (thanks to Andrew Gillan) that the sublimated print on the shirts significantly downplays the distance between the Anoeta and San Sebastian’s famed beaches, but we can forgive Macron a little artistic license.
This homage to the Basque city of San Sebastian, the newly-renovated Anoeta and Real Sociedad is the kind of shirt that excites us at Sartorial Soccer, and whilst we’d probably have preferred to have see the home side wear their familair stripes; we look forward to seeing the kit again when they travel to face Real Madrid after the international break.
