Hummel’s mission to update football’s favourite retro designs continued apace with a neat cover version of Cambridge United’s 1990s litmus paper away kit.
The League Two club have worn this tribute to Vandanel’s 1993-94 away kit on their travels this season and for our money, these Hummel shirts, complete with the Danish brand’s customary chevrons, improve on the original source material.

The old litmus paper design was resurrected after fans overwhelmingly favoured the classic 90s shirt in an online poll between three retro designs.
We’re told that Hummel and Cambridge United have signed a club record contract that importantly gives creativity and control back to the Abbey Stadium outfit.

Added to the watercolour style shift in shades of blue across these unconventionally striped shirts, the U’s know that their kits are possibly the most environmentally friendly they’ve ever worn.
Normally it takes 25 litres of water to dye an individual t-shirt but thanks to Hummel’s ZEROH2O system, no water is used, with 50% less energy consumed compared to conventional kit production methods.

With one of the world’s great seats of learning on Cambridge United’s doorstep, we’re pleased to see a little science incorporated into their beautifully bespoke kits.
It’s hard to believe that up until their return last season, Hummel spent so long out of the limelight.
The Danes are back and on top form. This is one of our favourite EFL shirts of 2019.
